Larkin Community Hospital receives approval for new Medical Residency Training Programs in Anesthesiology & Diagnostic Radiology

Miami, Florida, February 1, 2017—The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Larkin Community Hospital (LCH) recently announced the initial accreditation of two residency programs in Anesthesiology and Diagnostic Radiology.

The ACGME granted the hospital approval to train 16 medical residents in Diagnostic Radiology effective 1/26/2017 and 12 medical residents in Anesthesiology effective 7/1/2017. Residents in the Anesthesiology program rotate at Larkin Health System’s South Miami and Hialeah (Palm Springs Campus) hospitals while residents in the Diagnostic Radiology program rotate at six Larkin Imaging Center locations throughout Miami-Dade County in addition to rotations at the health system’s hospitals.

LCH is the third largest Statutory Teaching Hospital in Florida and the largest teaching hospital for osteopathic physicians (D.O.) in the United States, offering the largest number of training programs (32 different specialties in total). LCH sponsors an allopathic residency (M.D.) program in Psychiatry. In addition, LCH also has a School of Nursing, a College of Pharmacy, and a Masters of Biomedical Sciences Program, and has been approved to open a Charter Middle School for Health Sciences in Fall 2018. The expansion of graduate medical education programs at LCH continues to demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to train the next generation of physicians to serve the needs of the citizens of Florida.

Our School of Nursing offers a Registered Nurse Associate Degree and a Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. In addition, our College of Biomedical Sciences offers three Post-Baccalaureate Masters Degree Programs in Biomedical Sciences and has been approved to offer a PhD degree. Our College of Health Sciences has been approved to offer two year degree programs in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Radiologic Technology. Our College of Pharmacy offers a 3-year Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Program.
Our Palm Springs Campus, is a 247 bed full service acute care hospital located in a 15 acre campus in Hialeah, Florida and includes a 7 story Medical Office Building.

Larkin Community Hospital Behavioral Health Services, our hospital located in Hollywood, Florida, includes a 50 bed inpatient behavioral health unit and also offers comprehensive behavioral health services.

The Miami Neuroscience Center at Larkin Community Hospital specializes in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. This 25 member team, led by world renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Aizik Wolf, has performed over 8000 procedures during the past 20 years. Gamma Knife is a non-invasive state of the art neurological procedure used to treat brain tumors, head and neck cancer, and neurological conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia and Arteriovenous Malformations. Dr. Wolf is among the select few physicians honored with the prestigious Patients’ Choice Award, given to only 5% of physicians in the United States.

The state of the art Center for Advanced Orthopedics at Larkin Community Hospital specializes in advanced surgical techniques using the latest multimodal perioperative pain management modalities and state of art instrumentation with advanced robotic technology. The center includes a patient centered team with an outcomes-oriented philosophy. The Center has a robust research component with an on-going prospective surgical registry. The research being done at the center has resulted in better outcomes and changed the way orthopedic surgeons practice. A comprehensive rehabilitation department is also part of the center.

The Cancer Center at Larkin led by internationally renowned Hematologist/Oncologist Dr. Orlando Silva specializes in providing the latest advances in the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Silva joins us from the University of Miami’s Leonard Miller School of Medicine, where he served for 14 years in the clinical role of Attending Physician in Medical Oncology and Hematology and Director of Breast Cancer Education with a special focus in fighting breast cancer. Dr. Silva’s publications include Breast Cancer: A Practical Guide, which is among the most important texts in Breast cancer education in the world, with 3 editions printed and translations in many languages. Dr. Silva’s work in education and research led him to found the Inter-American Breast Cancer Conference, which has hosted 6 world meetings to date with participants from 36 different countries. Treatments available at the center include chemotherapy, Biologic agents, and endocrine therapy. In addition to traditional Breast cancer treatments, Dr. Silva advocates for the prevention of cancer occurrence and/or recurrence through nutrition, anti-inflammatory, and immune system boosting treatments.

The Florida Academic Dermatology Center at Larkin is one of the few inpatient dermatology units in the United States. Led by world renowned academic dermatologist Dr. Francisco Kerdel, this department provides specialized care for severe dermatological conditions including but not limited to immunobullous disorders, collagen vascular diseases and papulosquamous disorders. In addition, we specialize in the care of cutaneous T-Cell lymphoma, and chronic Graft vs Host disease. This center is equipped with photopheresis, hydrotherapy and phototherapy units which are effective in the treatment of many dermatologic disorders.

Larkin Community Hospital offers state-of-the-art imaging technology with board-certified Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologists. Our imaging centers are conveniently located on our South Miami Campus and throughout South Florida to better serve your diagnostic needs. We provide a wide range of imaging services, which include Angiography, PET/CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Cardiac imaging, Breast Imaging, and sleep lab. Same day appointments and transportation are available upon request.

Our Joint Commission Accredited Home Health Agency, Larkin Home Health Services, provides comprehensive services in your home under the direction of your physician. Our services include skilled nursing, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, home health aides and medical social workers. Our service area includes Miami-Dade and Broward County.

The Larkin Health Sciences Campus is a 48 acre site located in Mandarin Lakes and will be the home of Larkin University, a state of the art multidisciplinary teaching facility which will include our College of Pharmacy, our School of Nursing, our College of Biomedical Sciences, our College of Medicine and our College of Dentistry.

Our 180 bed Assisted Living Facility, Floridian Gardens, is licensed to provide Extended Congregate Care and Limited Mental Health Services. Floridian Gardens is a great option when loved ones need additional assistance but do not require 24 hour Skilled Nursing Care. We provide a home-like atmosphere in an expansive 5 acre campus located South West of our South Miami campus.

Our 152 bed Skilled Nursing Facility, The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills offers a comprehensive line of rehabilitation services, including Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapy specializing in treating the unique needs of individuals who are in transition between the hospital and home. We also offer a complete gamut of outpatient rehabilitation services.
